Back to Craig's
Our across-the-road neighbor, Mike, was due for his second Covid shot today so we drove him down to a Publix in Lutz. There is a lot of construction on I75 exits and we were talking and missed the exit so we just drove to the next one and came in the back way. Actually it was a nice little diversion as we got to drive through the actual town of Lutz. After Mike's shot we stopped at Craig and Janet's and they took us to a 'bird sanctuary'. It was a small local lake with some islands which must provide some protection from predators for the nesting birds. The wood storks have taken up residence in great numbers as well as a number of other birds. We then stopped off to launch some rockets. The wind was very high but we launched anyway. My first launch went fine but the nose and parachute separated from the rocket and they drifted a long way before finally coming to rest way up in a tall pine tree. It was good and tangled and was not coming down even in the high winds. The rocket itself was fine so I decided to launch it without a nose. It went up about 50 feet and spun around before falling to the ground. It did crack a couple of fins which have since been repaired. Now I just have to create a new nose and parachute. The fuzzy picture is the nose and parachute up in the tree. Craig did launch his rocket and the launch went well but the parachute didn't fully deploy which turned out to be a blessing. The rocket was so light and the winds so strong that it came down about 300 yards away, over fences, ponds and other fields. If the parachute had deployed it probably would be coming down in Cuba about now. While they were tracking down the rocket I got a chance to fly my drone which performed very well in the high winds. Craig's damage was limited to a broken fin and a singed parachute. We then headed back to Craig and Janet's where they served us a nice lunch and we celebrated Janet's birthday a few days early. We then headed back home a somewhat different way since we were in a exploratory mood.
