Big Bend National park, Texas

May 9, 2007

Beautiful but remote.  The entrances to the park are 70 to 80 miles from any town of any size.  The visitor's center is 20 miles from either gate and the the campground is another 20 miles from the v. center and the maximum speed is 45.  Alesa says Big Bend is beautiful, bold, buggy, bodacious, brown, blooming, brilliant, bizarre, -----    I agree, it is all of that and more.   Today we went to Chiso basin up in the mountains, from 1,800 feet at the river to 5,400 feet.   We went on a ranger quided tour.  Very interesting and informative.  On the way back to camp we went down every side road and even needed 4 wheel drive on occasion.  Alesa especially enjoyed the ones on the side of a cliff with no guard rails.  The last one ended with a hike through a gorge along the river.  When the Mexicans started calling to us from across the river Alesa decided we were done and proceeded to drive me home. (note: We are still married.)  Another storm tonight, no rain but the wind lasted until late in the night.  When the clouds clear, the stars are so big and bright and numerous that you think you should be able to climb on the rocks and touch them.
