The Camp NanaPapa Storm

June 26, 2010

Today started as a quiet day with the kids taking showers, then off to get donuts and to the library for DVDs and books.  After lunch, with donuts, they settled into an hour of reading.  It was a hot, sunny day with darkness off in the distance.  It didn't take but 5 minutes for the bright sunshine to turn into a full fledged storm.  It was dark and pouring with straight line winds of up to 80 mph.  We have never seen such strong winds.  The kids sat back from the bay window and watched leaves, twigs, branches and garbage cans blow by.  It lasted about a half an hour and then sprinkled for awhile.  We had no damage except for a lot of small branches and leaves in the yard and the power went out at about 3.  We could see a couple of trees down from the house and heard a lot of sirens so we all went out and walked around the neighborhood to survey the damage.  There were at least a dozen large trees down but we didn't see any property damage except a shed with a little breakage from a large branch on top of it.  After we visited with all the neighbors and came back in the house we rounded up all the flashlights we could find.  Alesa cooked dinner (Tacos) on the grill and the kids played outside until it got late then we tried to watch a DVD on the laptop but, being a rental from the library, it was all scratched and kept restarting.  The kids had great fun, even making a game out of the constantly restarting DVD.  Jeff's friend had borrowed his generator and lived just up the road so he brought it over and we hooked up the TV and DVD player and watched a movie.  About 10:30 the power came back on so we turned off the generator and switched back to house power.  After about 10 minutes the power went out again so it was time for bed.  The sky was clear and the moon full so you could see enough to walk around but everyone had a flashlight just in case.   The new vanity plate for the truck "ERIE BOY" that Alesa had ordered for me came in the mail while we were away.
