Durango & Cortez

May 23, 2007

Today was a rainy, cold, overcast day so we postponed the visit to Mesa Verde until better weather.  We are going to stay here a couple of extra days to visit and rest.  Last night and today the temperature never got above 40 but the heater and fireplace kept us toasty.  We drove to Durango and walked around the historic downtown, the Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railroad station and the museum.  We then drove into the mountains toward Silverton but, knowing they had 15 inches of snow, we turned back once we started to hit accumulations at 9,000 feet.  We then went shopping at Wal-Mart in Cortez and then back to cook dinner and other goodies.  'A' was complaining because water boils before 212 at elevation.  We then got our own snowstorm with about an inch of wet snow.   The sun has since come out and the snow is melted.  It is suppose to get to 70 tomorrow.
