Goodbye Explorer

March 2, 2025

We have been looking for a new car as the Explorer is showing its age with 82,000 miles (I have never had to change the brakes). We have been to all the dealerships over the last two months and had narrowed our search down to Mercedes and Hyundai. We were very happy with the Hyundai Elantra we owned before the Explorer, so we were leaning in the direction of the Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy. I did a lot of research on the internet and noted that the Hyundai dealership in North Scottsdale had the best inventory, so we headed there last Thursday to see what they had. It is farther away than our local dealership but in the direction of the German restaurant we were going to for dinner. Even though we were not planning to buy at that time it turned out that they had the exact configuration for the Calligraphy that we were looking for. Needless to say we did not make it to dinner that evening as negotiations and paperwork kept us there until after 7. The salesman delivered the car to us the next day and picked up the Explorer. We are now on a crash course to learn to use all the functions as there are many. Alesa's is the self-parking capability especially the ability to back itself out of a tight spot. Annoying when a car parks so close to you that it is hard to get back into your own car. When the salesman delivered it, we made him back it into the garage while outside the car to verify the function. We loved the Explorer and was sad to see it go but on to new adventures with all the available bells and whistles. Alesa continues to do her PT with her last session this Monday and she has an appointment with the surgeon on the following Monday. She is living in the hope that she will be able to ditch the sling which has been her constant and very uncomfortable companion these last 5 weeks. My back is doing well as the nerves continue to heal but I need to wait another 2 months before I am cleared to golf. The hip I had replaced 17 years ago may be giving me trouble so I will have it checked. One thing at a time. Today we celebrated Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) with Jeff, Danielle, Bailey and Nicki (Bailey's girlfriend) and Alesa prepared Jambalaya, File Gumbo, Crawfish Pie and we even had a few crawfish for shucking and sucking. Also had donuts and spinach casserole for the less adventurous. We celebrated today since Jeff will be out of town on Tuesday and Bailey is often not home during the week. Plus, he will be moving to a high-rise apartment in downtown Phoenix after March 11th and is very busy preparing. We missed having Bridget since she was working today and is always busy between school and work. Jeff and Danielle rode over in their brand-new golf cart and then we went back with him to see their new TV. Very nice and Bailey will be taking their old one for his apartment. It is also the start of pool season so prepared our pool and started the heater last weekend and have been in it a few times. Alesa is making full use of it to work out her shoulder and is finding it a great help. We are only heating it on the days we are going to use it, and the cover keeps it close overnight, so it does not take it long to get up to 87 degrees or so.
