The Gulf & Mardi Gras

February 1, 2008

Today was another beautiful sunny day getting up to above 60.  Roni and Denny came down and we drove south of Houma to Cocodrie where the road ends in the delta by the gulf.  It was a nice drive through the fishing villages, sportsman camps and summer homes and back up through the wetlands.  We stopped at a local eatery, Schmoopy's, in Dulac.  The food was great and we spent some time talking to the owners about the people, the land and the economy.   We came back to the trailer for coffee and king cake and then into Houma for the Friday night Mardi Gras parade by the Krewe of Aphrodite.  We went in a few hours early to miss the crowds and walked around the mall and town before the parade.  What a social event it is with cycles and cars driving the parade route as people assemble and before they close the road.  It reminded me a lot of the tailgate parties before football games.  Many people parked along the route with their pickups backed up to the road.  Where there were deep drainage ditches they would put planks across and park with their wheels on either side of the ditch.  The bed of the trucks made great seats and a convenient place to store all the goodies thrown their way.  It was a great party even though it got a little cold when the sun went down.  We have no clue what we are going to do with all the beads, Alesa says 'No More Beads!".  Tomorrow is Groundhog day but we don't plan to get up early enough to hear what Phil is doing but we will watch for "Boudreaux", the unofficial groundhog of Washington Parish.
