Hawk Mountain Sanctuary

June 27, 2009

Today we hiked at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.  It is outside of the migration season but it was a great 2 mile or so walk just the same among the boulders.  We did see a number of vultures soaring in the thermals and updrafts and I believe I did see one hawk or falcon soaring down below us.  The configuration and slope of Blue Mountain in this area funnels the wind to create updrafts to assist the migratory flights of a counted 20,000 raptors annually.  Alesa and I, Ann and Bob Goodman and Linda and Mike Holden piled into the truck and had a nice drive through the countryside to Hawk Mountain and then stopped at Cabelas on the way home.
