Headed East
6/1-Left home around six and travelled through the desert, the canyons, the mountains and high prairie before arriving in Tucumcari, NM at about five for a total distance of about 680 miles. We had a great trip with good weather and traffic but lost an hour as we were still in Mountain time but went to Daylight Savings Time. Driving through the desert, up the canyons, through the mountains and the high desert provided some great scenery. Toured Tucumcari a little, walked to Blake's Lotaburger for dinner and returned to the Days Inn for the night.
6/2-Left the motel after breakfast a little before seven and got back on I-40 and headed east. Got on I-44 in Oklahoma City and got to Joplin, MO by a little after four after another 680 miles. The weather and traffic were great again and we did lose another hour as we entered CDT. We checked into the Quality Inn and walked to the Olive Garden for dinner.
6/3-Decided to do two short days to get to Erie so we made reservations in Terre Haute and got on I-44 a little before seven. We got on I-70 in St. Louis and saw a sign outside of Casey, IL which advertised the world’s largest pitchfork, golf tee and wind chime so we just had to go see. We drove into town and saw the world’s largest rocking chair, wind chimes, ruler, mailbox, birdcage, plus others before deciding not to go outside of town to see the pitchfork and golf tee. We had another great day of weather and traffic and covered about 450 miles and lost another hour as we entered EDT at the Indiana border. We checked into the Drury Inn and Suites in Terre Haute and were surprised at how much they offered. They were super clean, gave us a taco bar dinner with three free drinks and an awesome buffet breakfast. I took the chance to use their swimming pool and hot tub.
6/4-Got on I-70 around seven for the last leg to Erie. As we approached Dayton, I realized that I would probably not get another chance the visit the National Air Force museum at Wright Patterson AFB so Alesa agreed to a two hour delay so we could visit it. We had the car navigate us to it and we were able to visit and be back on the road in an hour and a half. After picking up I-71 in Columbus and I-271 and I-90 in Cleveland we made it to Bob and Cathy’s by around five where he had a nice dinner prepared for us. Another day of good weather and traffic and covered about 450 miles. It was the only day we did not lose an hour by changing time zones. And, of course, we ended the day at Whippy Dip with orange sherbert and vanilla twist cones.
