Home Safe

June 28, 2025

Left Craig & Janet's early on the 25th, had breakfast at the Wawa and watched a red hot-air balloon drift by before heading out on the 4 day return trip home, three 580-mile days followed by the final 400-mile trip. We gained an hour on our first leg to Gulfport, MS so we toured the downtown and harbor before eating at the Shrimp Shack. The second leg to Seguin, TX was uneventful. We were happy to drive through Beaumont where we had camped to do Habitat work years earlier. Even the Houston traffic was bearable. We stopped for gas at Buc-ees at one point but with summer vacation in full swing it was a total madhouse. We did get a chance to go to downtown Seguin to get a picture of the world's largest pecan before having dinner at a nice little Italian restaurant next to our hotel on I-10. I also called our car dealer to schedule the first oil change and general inspection for Monday because it was due at 7,500 miles and it will have over 8,500 when we get home. On the third leg Google guided us around San Antonio rush-hour traffic on the way to El Paso. We gained another hour and had a chance to drive through Ft. Bliss where I was stationed two times over 56 years ago. Getting registered to enter the base was a hassle but fairly easy. The post was totally different but a few things did look slightly familiar. We drove by the area where we lived in on-post housing during my second time there with Alesa and baby-Mike and it was a bare field. This was not a surprise as I have seen satellite photos of the area recently. We have been blessed with great weather and traffic for the entire trip until about two miles away from the New Mexico border. We were directed off I-10 due to an accident and crawled along for a half an hour or so when we came to a dead stop and I could see oversize loads ahead having trouble negotiating the detour. It didn't look good as google maps was showing a very out of the way detour ahead if we ever started moving again. I noticed cars going down the side of the road and not backing up. So, I followed. Turns out they were driving over a curb and through the dirt and around the scrub for about 50 yards or so to a perfectly open i-10. When I did the same and reached the highway the Google estimates for time and distance returned to the originals. Clear sailing the rest of the way. The cars that stayed on the detour may still be there. We continued on I-10 through Tucson rather than through the mountains as we did the last time. The Tucson route was 30 miles longer but 20 minutes shorter. We gained another hour at the Arizona line and got home around Noon. We unloaded the car, went shopping at Sam's and took the car through the car wash. We still had to scrub some of the bugs off the front of the car, but the car wash softened them up a bit. We will go through the car wash again tomorrow to finish the job. We had considered stopping at the Rockhound State Park outside of Demming, NM but they didn't open until 10 and it was before 9 so we passed. We may return at a later date as we did enjoy our earlier visit to Demming and the park. Wonderful trip, wonderful visits and wonderful to be home. A many thanks to all the people who made our trip so enjoyable.
