Pegasus Bridge

October 21, 2021

Drove past Sword beach to the Pegasus Bridge. The Americans parachuted into Normandy the night before into the town of Sainte-Mere Eglise to secure the left flank of the invasion while the British parachuted and used gliders to capture the Pegasus bridge and secure the right flank. The three gliders assigned to the bridge all landed within 80 yards of the bridge and even had to wake the Germans because their approach was so quiet. The actual bridge was in use until 1994 until it was replaced because it could not handle a longer bridge which was needed. A new bridge, longer but exactly like the old bridge was constructed and the old bridge was saved and moved just across the road to the museum. The bridge's name was changed to Pegasus after it was secured by the British unit whose insignia was 'Pegasus'. The British tour guide at the museum was very excited about his job and gave a very good tour. We then returned to the boat through rush hour traffic in Rouen but stayed awake and enjoyed the countryside. After dinner we were treated to a nice show by a very good French combo from Paris. She sang and played the flute and he played the guitar and were performing WWII era songs.
