Sedona

May 17, 2007

Today we took a back road to Sedona.  It was the best way to get our first view of the town.  We wound down from the high mountain forest on precipitous roads through red canyons with beautiful views of the town and the surrounding countryside.  It has got to be one of, if not the most beautiful area in the US.   We took a lot of pictures but were disappointed as they do not come close to accurately showing the red of the rock nor the scale of the views.   The road in was a dirt forest road and was very, very bumpy and we saw no other traffic until we got close to town and then there were only tour Jeeps and Hummers bringing tourists up to see the views.  We walked the uptown and then drove to some of the better viewing points.  We then drove along Oak Creek on the way back to Flagstaff.  We stopped many times along the way.   One for A to buy some jewelry and to talk to the Navajo woman about the area, the Novajo people, her life story and Tony Hillerman books.  It all sounded like blah - blah - blah to me but it did allow her to accomplish two of her goals and now mama is happy.   Another stop was at 'Sliding Rock State Park', which turned out to be a long channel in the rocks with the creek running through where people were swimming and sliding down the rock.  Tomorrow we will move the trailer just north of Flagstaff and get caught up with whatever we have to get caught up with.  Saturday we will get up early for a day trip to the Grand Canyon.  I don't think we will have internet access for a few days.
