Skeet & the Everglades

March 10, 2007

Today we traveled southeast of Naples and saw some of the real Florida.  We traveled with Janet & Craig and Ray Carroll and his son, Robbie.  Ray grew up in Naples and loves to show off his Florida and we love it.  We went skeet & trap shooting in the morning and the girls did great.  It was their first time and now they are hooked.   We then went farther southeast to Ray's camp in the everglades.   After about 35 miles on highway, then 3 miles on a dirt road, then 2.5 miles on a two track trail barely sqeezing between the bushes and drainage canals,  we rode over about 1.5 miles of prairie (grasslands).  The ride over the grassland felt like being on safari on the grasslands of Africa.  We saw deer, hawks, lubbers (crickets) gators and no snowbirds except Alesa & I.   It is the dry season and water is limited to gator holes and drainage canals.  During the wet season the grasslands are covered with a few inches of water and only the higher (by inches) land, usually with trees, is above the water.
