Travel to Arizona

November 17, 2023

Left Florida on Tuesday morning to start the journey of four 500-mile days to Gilbert, Arizona. North on I-75 then west on I-10 to Biloxi, Mississippi for the first night. Wednesday morning, west on I-10 to Seguin, Texas just east of San Antonio for the second night. Thursday morning, west on I-10 to Van Horn, Texas. But, on arrival at 2 PM, there was no water to their side of I-10 due to some utility work. So, since it was early and we were going to gain an hour, we decided to cancel our stay and travel on to El Paso for the third night. We arrived there at 3 PM and had a nice dinner at Famous Daves before heading back to the hotel. We were going to tour a bit since we lived there when I was stationed at Fort Bliss twice in the early 70’s but we were just too tired. Friday morning, west on I-10 toward Las Cruces where we had breakfast after which Google Maps detoured us off I-10 due to an accident. From our detour we could see men on horseback rounding up cattle wandering on the highway from a cattle car involved in an accident. Then back on I-10 through Deming to Lordsburg, New Mexico where we got off on Rt 70 to take it and Rt 60 through the mountains to Gilbert rather than I-10 through Tucson. It was a beautiful ride through the mountains and we got to Jeff’s in Gilbert at about 1 PM on Friday the 17th. During the trip we made a few stops at Buc-ee’s on the recommendation of Craig and Janet. The trip on the whole was enjoyable but tiring. We had no traffic delays except for the one- or two-minute delay caused by the ‘cattle’ incident. Traffic near or through the major cities was bumper to bumper and fast and furious but there were only a few of those.
