On the way to Big Bend

May 9, 2007

We left San Angelo this morning and hope we have left the threat of tornados behind.   We went through Eldorado, Fort Stockton and Marathon on our way.  It was mostly desert but much of it was in bloom.   We saw a windmill farm, a giant roadrunner statue and lots of Texas.  Big Bend was was a surprise as the mountains loomed in front of us shrouded in clouds.  It is a very impressive, but remote national park.  There is no cell phone coverage in the park nor internet access in the campground.  We set up in the park at the Rio Grande Village RV park.  It started to storm as we finished setting up.  Rain, thunder and lightning, pea size hail and 40 to 50 mile an hour winds.  The rain was over quickly but the wind lasted until about 9.  All in all we had a good night.  One of the campers was coming back from the day's activities and encountered golf ball size hail about 5 miles north of the campside.  The roof of his white Dodge now looks like a golf ball.
