We have arrived in Maine

July 25, 2007

We arrived in Maine on July 10th and spent a night in Portland.  We are always going by and never get a chance to stop and tour the city.  We did the tour and it was worth the stop as it is a charming, albeit large, seaport.  We did our normal stop at LL Bean as well.  We arrived at Grand Lake Stream the next day and had no problems with the back roads in Maine or Steve and Laura's driveway,  although there were some apple tree leaves stuck in the awnings.  We spent the next three days helping set up and run a yard sale for Laura's sister Betsey Fales.  It was her son, Colson's, home who was killed last Christmas eve and they will be selling the home and property ($144K for a 44 acres and a home on the St Croix river 7 miles south of Calais, if you are interested).  We continue to visit with Laura and her sisters and their families who have come back with many friends to help with the proceedings.  We even saw a cow moose with calf who ran next to our slow moving car for a while before going back into the woods.  The Takach's came for a visit on Thursday and the Whitelys came Saturday and we deep fried their smelt over a roaring campfire, delicious.  Gretchen, Laura's oldest, spent Sunday night from Bangor with her husband Dave and daughter Ingrid.  Monday we went to Sally and Art's camp on the lake to enjoy the day and swim, drink and eat a meal cooked on the campfire.  On Tuesday there was a terrible accident which closed the main road out and we had to take the true backwoods roads out.  We just had to go golfing!  While golfing at St Croix the bald eagles nesting above the 7th tee, took their eaglets for their first filght.  On Wednesday, Alesa & Laura went shopping in Canada (St Andrews)  while I stayed home to fish, hike and catch up on finances.
