Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park
Tuesday we finally painted the master bedroom. Alesa has been planning it forever and bought the paint a couple of weeks ago. So, we got it done and played a little golf afterwards. Yesterday morning Alesa played platform tennis and a ricocheted ball hit her under the right eye so she has a bit of a mouse. But it's not too bad and should clear up in a day or two. This morning things were a little slow so we decided to head over to Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park which is a state park over on the gulf coast just below Crystal River. It was a privately owned park which contained mostly animals for use in movies. It went out of business and the land was bought by Citrus County and eventually by the state and made into a park for the rescue, rehabilitation and release of Florida native animals. In addition to the recovering animals, those who cannot be released remain on display. Two of the original animals remain, a Florida Black Bear (Gentle Ben) and a Hippo from Daktari names "Lu". Lu is obviously not a native of Florida but when he was to be relocated the local school children mounted a letter writing campaign to the Florida governor, who officially made Lu an honorary Florida citizen who was thereby entitled to stay. The warm spring-fed pools are filled with manatees during the winter months which is a big draw for the park. They also have an underwater viewing platform in the spring where you can see the manatees and fish. (The aforementioned spring is where the water comes from not the season, the platform is there all year) Even thought it's not winter there were a couple of manatees in the pool as they do have year long residents. On a side note, I was surprised to learn that Florida provides a free annual park pass to disabled veterans so Alesa and I got in free and have access to any Florida state park.. Cool!, but we will be sure to leave good donations.
