Isolation

April 23, 2020

We are surviving isolation well, we think we are busier than ever finishing old projects and starting new ones. Last Friday we took a 37 mile golf cart ride to some far reachable parts of The Villages and beyond. We stopped to see Ann & Ed Dawson for a short driveway visit then to Larry & Diane Carullo where they showed us their new house where they will be moving once they return in the fall. They drove back to Erie on Sunday with very little traffic. We golf on Sunday and walk every day, mostly to the mailboxes and then around the neighborhood, keeping the proper distance. Last week sometime, we started seeing a large number of gnats gathering around the living room light at night. We don’t see them during the day and extensive searching has given no clue of where they are coming from. We have been turning on a lamp away from us and have a bowl of vinegar, sugar and dish soap as a trap. We only saw a few last night so, hopefully, the invasion is over. We think they are fungus gnats so Alesa is watering her garden less as we have no indoor plants. Alesa spends her time gardening, landscaping, cooking and watching Acorn & Britbox on Roku. I’ve been busy with finances and genealogy. Our library has made Ancestry available for a month, so I have discovered quite a bit of information to add to our data base on the “Family Tree Maker” software. Just found out this morning that the library has extended access through May. Tuesday, I replaced a kitchen fan switch and an outlet in the guest bedroom with one which includes a couple of USB ports. These were the ones I replaced on the black granite backsplash. Yesterday was a particularly busy day which started with a little bit of shopping. We were going to stop at Lowes for Alesa’s gardening supplies on the way back but the parking lot was packed so we just came home. While Alesa worked on her gardening (she loves to dig in the dirt) I was finishing entering information from a large Hulvey genealogy book. That is Alesa’s maternal grandmother’s family. Janet has connected with a Niebauer from Erie on Facebook and asked if she was related. Turns out she is Alesa and Craig’s third cousin. I started texting her and she provided some additional information which I was able to enhance with some cemetery searches. During this, I received a messenger note for an army buddy I haven’t seen for over 25 years. Last time was when I found him in a phonebook while in Sioux Falls during a family trip to the west coast. He had discovered me on Facebook and read our blog. We will connect later this week. He is a good friend, we met at Fort Bliss at the A. D. Officer’s Basic Course, went to flight school together and served in Korea together. Really looking forward to reconnecting and happy he reached out as I have had no luck finding him. Last night we ‘Zoom’ed with Craig & Janet and Mike & Ruth for a couple of hours. Mike is a Hulvey cousin who we used to visit in Virginia as we traveled from Pennsylvania to Florida. Haven’t seen them in a couple of years. Steve & Laura were supposed to be visiting today and it is also the day we were to play water volleyball at the Senior Games but all that was cancelled. As we take our walks, we pass by a splotch of paint marking the location of a manhole. Alesa has often mentioned that the circle on the curb should have a face. Last time she said that I pulled out a Sharpie and Voila! It now smiles at us every time we pass. Oh, and Monk is back on duty on our golf cart.
