Hydroelectric and locks

October 13, 2021

We passed through a couple of locks last night as we slept. We passed through a couple more shortly after leaving Viviers. We were on the upper deck to watch the entire process. We will be going through 12 locks on the way to Lyon. The area of the Rhone Valley is well known for its winds, called ‘mistrail’ and they did not disappoint as it has been very windy so far. To clear this lock the canopies, railings, lawn chairs had to be taken down (lowered) on the top deck. The pilot house even had to be lowered a bit. It will have to be mostly retracted into the ship for many of the bridge as well. A few talks this evening, a trivia challenge as well as a Viking Explorer cocktail party for those who have sailed with Viking before.
