Trip Log

November 17, 2019

Just out of Page we stopped at the Horseshoe Curve on the Colorado River. It was a mile and a half walk but well worth it. We had heard of Waterhole Canyon which was just beyond horseshoe curve. You needed to buy a Navajo pass for $5 each then you could tour the canyon at your leisure.

Spent the night in Page, Arizona and after breakfast visited the Glen Canyon dam again. Stopped by last night but the visitors center was closed so we drove around Page a bit.

The primary purpose of this trip from Jeff's was here at Bryce Canyon. Alesa is a Tony Hillerman fan and has always wanted to see the red hoodoos and the park did not disappoint.

November 16, 2019

We left Kanab this morning headed to Bryce Canyon, a 79 mile trip, and were pleasantly surprised to pass through Red Canyon park. It was a beautiful preview of Bryce Canyon with its red cliffs and hoodoos (vertical pillars). Wish the red showed up better because it was very impressive.

Passed our hotel in Kanab early enough to head off to Zion. We entered the east gate and drove through the park to the visitors center at the main entrance just out of Springdale, Utah.

We have been to the Grand Canyon a number of times but never the north rim. So, this trip we had to stop. It is a 45 mile trip off the main road (89A) on Arizona route 67. It was a long drive through some burned out forest but it was well worth it and a check mark on a pseudo bucket list.

November 15, 2019

Headed north out of Flagstaff this morning. We crossed the Colorado River on the norther edge of the Navajo Reservation and stopped at the visitors center for the Navajo Bridge.

November 14, 2019

After a long day we drove out to Meteor Crater. We had passed it years ago but didn't stop and I regretted it.

November 14, 2019

While at the Sunset Crater visitors center someone told us about Walnut Canyon so we stopped on the way to Meteor Crater. It was another impressive sight with a very deep and steep canyon where there are cliff dwellings from over 800 years ago.

November 14, 2019

Headed to Meteor Crater later today but thought we would check out Sunset Crater where the astronauts trained for their trip to the moon. It was very impressive with the dormant volcano and the many old lava flows.
